I went into writing The Brink thinking that I had completed all the research and had all of the inspiration I needed. I had no idea how wrong I was.
It wasn't until I had taken it through the writer's workshop wringer and gained feedback from some colleagues that realised I had to take a step back. I now knew that I knew nothing, very Socrates. My knowledge of the time period wasn't enough, my worldbuilding wasn't sound enough, but equally as important, the way I was going about the prose itself was rushed and slightly immature.
So- after a lengthy and mildly painful scouring of my conscience, I took a step back for some time, worked on other projects, read up a little more whenever I could. After some weeks, I felt ready to try again. Taking into account the many well-deserved criticisms of previous drafts, I know think that I have a better sense of the characters, what their purpose is in the story, their journeys (positive and/or negative) and how to integrate the fictional world into a different time period. It's been eating away at me long enough for me to deserve some results, I think.
I am going to attempt to keep it simple over this new first draft (It feels like the hundredth) and see what happens from there.
I'm going to start with Daniel's (The escaped lab experiment) point of view, and get him to meet Paul Campbell (The ex-soldier), before sending them off into the grim, cold-war-era world.
The wait will be worth it.
